{"id":8939,"date":"2024-02-28T13:47:54","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T12:47:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/?p=8939"},"modified":"2024-03-03T17:58:10","modified_gmt":"2024-03-03T16:58:10","slug":"a-computational-model-for-co2-dependence-on-temperature-in-the-vostok-ice-cores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/?p=8939&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"A Computational Model for CO2-Dependence on Temperature in the Vostok Ice cores"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"pdfprnt-buttons pdfprnt-buttons-post pdfprnt-top-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/index.php?rest_route=wpv2posts8939&print=print\" class=\"pdfprnt-button pdfprnt-button-print\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/plugins\/pdf-print\/images\/print.png\" alt=\"image_print\" title=\"Inhalt drucken\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/pub\/data\/paleo\/icecore\/antarctica\/vostok\/\">Vostok Ice core provides<\/a> a more than 400000 year view into the climate history with several cycles between ice ages and warm periods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It hat become clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/pub\/data\/paleo\/icecore\/antarctica\/vostok\/co2.txt\">CO<sub>2<\/sub> data<\/a> are lagging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/pub\/data\/paleo\/icecore\/antarctica\/vostok\/deutnat.txt\">temperature data<\/a> by several centuries. One difficulty arises from the necessity that CO<sub>2<\/sub> is measured in the gas bubbles whereas temperature is determined from a deuterium proxy in the ice.  Therefore there is a different way of determining the age for the two parameters &#8211; for CO<sub>2<\/sub> there is a &#8222;gas age&#8220;, whereas the temperature series is assigned an &#8222;ice age&#8220;.   There are estimates of how much older the &#8222;ice age&#8220; is in comparison to the gas age. But there is uncertainty, so we will have to tune the relation between the two time scales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preprocessing the Vostok data sets<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to perform model based computations with the two data sets, the  original data must be converted into equally spacially sampled  data sets. This is done by means of linear interpolation.  The sampling interval is chosen 100 years, which is approximately the sampling interval of the temperature data. Both levels are remarkably close, considering the very different environmental conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And relative change is<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-7493904d66b7bb5761be0b129390e537_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#92;&#102;&#114;&#97;&#99;&#123;&#100;&#67;&#125;&#123;&#100;&#84;&#125;&#32;&#61;&#32;&#49;&#51;&#46;&#53;&#32;&#92;&#102;&#114;&#97;&#99;&#123;&#112;&#112;&#109;&#125;&#123;&#94;&#92;&#99;&#105;&#114;&#99;&#32;&#67;&#125;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"22\" width=\"104\" style=\"vertical-align: -6px;\"\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is considerably different from the modern data, where we got <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-2d0d759ec5116eec6ab9587805f88adc_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#54;&#54;&#46;&#53;&#32;&#92;&#102;&#114;&#97;&#99;&#123;&#112;&#112;&#109;&#125;&#123;&deg;&#67;&#125;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"20\" width=\"60\" style=\"vertical-align: -6px;\"\/>.<br>There is no immediate explanation for this deviation. We need, however, consider the fact that we have time scale differences of at least 100 if not more.
