{"id":8739,"date":"2024-02-07T09:52:01","date_gmt":"2024-02-07T08:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/?p=8739"},"modified":"2024-04-25T07:47:44","modified_gmt":"2024-04-25T06:47:44","slug":"temperature-dependent-co2-sink-model","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/?p=8739&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Temperature Dependent CO2 Sink model"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"pdfprnt-buttons pdfprnt-buttons-post pdfprnt-top-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/index.php?rest_route=wpv2posts8739&print=print\" class=\"pdfprnt-button pdfprnt-button-print\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/plugins\/pdf-print\/images\/print.png\" alt=\"image_print\" title=\"Inhalt drucken\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the simple model of CO<sub>2<\/sub> sinks and natural emission<a href=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/?p=7740\">s published in this blog<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epochtimes.de\/meinung\/gastkommentar\/wir-koennen-weiterleben-ohne-sorgen-um-co2-und-netto-null-a4314374.html?utm_source=influencer&amp;utm_medium=all&amp;utm_campaign=joadengl\">elsewhere<\/a>, the question repeatedly arose in the discussion: How is the &#8212; obvious &#8212; temperature dependence of natural CO<sub>2<\/sub> sources, for example the outgassing oceans, or sinks such as photosynthesis, taken into account? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The model shows no long-term temperature dependence trend, only a short-term cyclical dependence. A long-term trend in temperature dependence over the last 70 years is not discernible even after careful analysis.<br>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4433\/14\/3\/566\">primary publication<\/a>, it was ruled out that the absorption coefficient could be temperature-dependent (Section 2.5.3). However, it remained unclear whether a direct temperature dependence of the sources or sinks is possible.  We re-visit the sink model in order to find a way to consider temperature dependence adequately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Original temperature-independent model<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For setting up the equation for mass conservation of CO<sub>2<\/sub> in the atmosphere (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4433\/14\/3\/566\">see equations 1,2,3 of the publication<\/a>), we split the total yearly emissions into anthropogenic emissions <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-b98e70028d6515eb74b40aed23681258_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#69;&#95;&#105;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"15\" width=\"18\" style=\"vertical-align: -3px;\"\/> in year <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-695d9d59bd04859c6c99e7feb11daab6_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#105;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"12\" width=\"6\" style=\"vertical-align: 0px;\"\/>, and all other, predominantly natural emissions <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-d758eba99052cf45dd4bfe82f5073660_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#78;&#95;&#105;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"15\" width=\"19\" style=\"vertical-align: -3px;\"\/> . For simplification, the &#8212; more unknown than known &#8212; land use caused emissions are included in the natural emissions. <br>The increase of CO<sub>2<\/sub> in the atmosphere is<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-e8306907fd3a0ee7377e7e45fe2cc512_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula absorption  and concentration by means of an absorption constant <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" <br>Effectively this assumed constant contains the sum of all emissions except the explicit anthropogenic ones and also all sinks that are balanced during the year. <br>Therefore it is enlightening to calculate the estimated natural emissions <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-c7c0a2e0044c895925eacf0b01330ceb_l3.png\" style=\"vertical-align: -3px;\"\/> from the measured data and the mass balance equation with the estimated absorption constant <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Therefore we will motivate and build this model in an intuitive way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question arises why and how sources or sinks should be dependent on El Nino?  It implies a temperature dependence. But why can&#8217;t the undeniable long term temperature trend be seen in the model? Why is there no trend in the estimated natural emissions?  <br>The answer is  in the fact that CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration and temperature are highly correlated, at least since 1960, i.e. during the time when CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration was measured with high quality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"901\" height=\"607\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Unbenannt-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Unbenannt-3.png 901w, https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Unbenannt-3-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Unbenannt-3-768x517.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 901px) 100vw, 901px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore any longterm trend dependent on temperature would be attributed to CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration when the model is based on concentration. <a href=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/?p=8365&amp;lang=en\">This has been analysed in detail<\/a>.  We make no claim of causality between CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration and temperature, in neither direction, but just recognise their strong correlation. The optimal linear CO<sub>2<\/sub>  modelling for temperature anomaly based on  the HadSST4 temperature data is:  <br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-81fe1cd9a44c6574d4e6ee396cd61dad_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" The reconstruction only deviates at 1990 due to the missing sink contribution from the Pinatubo eruption, but follows the shape of the concentration curve precisely. As long as temperature is correlated to CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration, the to trends cancel each other, and the effective sind coefficient appears invarant w.r.t. temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The extended model becomes relevant, when temperature and CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration diverge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If temperature rises faster than according the above CO<sub>2<\/sub> proxy relation, then we can expect a reduced sink effect, while with temperatures below the expectancy value of the proxy the sink effect will increase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a first hint for further research we can estimate the temperature equilibrium concentration based on current measurements. Stating the obvious, it is clear that CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration is controlled by temperature and not the other way round &#8211; the time lag between temperature changes and concentration changes is several centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/?p=8939&amp;lang=en\">The Vostok data have been analysed with the same model of concentration and temperature dependent sinks and natural sources<\/a>.
