If so, the curve would be concave, i.e. curved upwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or is the annual increase in concentration getting smaller and smaller? Then it would be convex, i.e. curved downwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or is there a transition, i.e. a turning point in the mathematical sense? This could be recognized by the fact that the annual increase initially increases and then decreases from a certain point in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At first glance, the overall curve appears concave, which means that the annual increase in concentration appears to increase with each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer to this question is crucial for the question of how urgent measures to curb CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Closer examination with the measured annual increase<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a more accurate impression, we calculate the &#8212; raw and slightly smoothed &#8212; annual increase in CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"890\" height=\"607\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Unbenannt.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Unbenannt.png 890w, https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Unbenannt-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Unbenannt-768x524.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This confirms that until 2016 there was a clear trend towards ever higher annual concentration increases, from just under 0.75 ppm\/year in 1960 to over 2.5 ppm\/year in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2016, however, the annual increase has been declining, initially slightly, but significantly more strongly in 2020 and 2021. The corona-related decline in emissions certainly plays a role here, but this does not explain the decline that began in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There is therefore an undisputed turning point in the concentration curve in 2016<\/strong>, i.e. a trend reversal from increasing concentration growth to decreasing concentration growth. Is there a satisfactory explanation for this? This is essential, because if we can foresee that the trend of decreasing concentration growth will continue, then it is foreseeable that the concentration will stop increasing at some point and the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement, the balance between CO<sub>2<\/sub> sources and CO<sub>2<\/sub> sinks, can be achieved in the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Explanation due to stagnating emissions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the Global Carbon Brief project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/global-co2-emissions-have-been-flat-for-a-decade-new-data-reveals\/\">Zeke Hausfather 2021 revised the values of global CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions over the last 20 years <\/a>based on new findings, with the important result that global emissions have been constant for 10 years within the limits of measurement accuracy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-1-1-1024x600.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-1-1-1024x600.png 1024w, https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-1-1-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-1-1-768x450.png 768w, https:\/\/klima-fakten.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-1-1.png 1218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To assess the implications of this important finding, one needs to know the relationship between emissions and CO2 concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From my own research on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4433\/14\/3\/566\">in a publication <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/judithcurry.com\/2023\/03\/24\/emissions-and-co2-concentration-an-evidence-based-approach\/\">in a subsequent blog post<\/a>, it follows that the increase in concentration results from the emissions and absorptions, which are proportional to the CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This model has also been described and published in a similar form by others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prof. Vollmer and Prof. Eberhardt <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1361-6404\/ad230d\">A simple model for the prediction of CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;concentrations in the atmosphere, depending on global CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prof Gantef\u00f6r in several videos, e.g.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2nndehljGug\"> here<\/a>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prof Vahrenholt, in the publication &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peertechzpublications.com\/articles\/AMS-7-136.pdf\">Oceans&#8216; surface pH-value as an example of a reversible natural response to an anthropogenic perturbation<\/a>&#8222;,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr Roy Spencer in the blog publication &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drroyspencer.com\/2019\/04\/a-simple-model-of-the-atmospheric-co2-budget\/\">A Simple Model of the Atmospheric CO2 Budget<\/a>&#8222;,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ari Halparin in the blog publication &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/defyccc.com\/docs\/se\/MDACC-Halperin.pdf\">Simple Equation of Multi-Decadal Atmospheric Carbon Concentration Change<\/a>&#8222;,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peter Dietze in the blog publication &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/eike-klima-energie.eu\/2023\/05\/09\/die-drei-c-modelle-fuer-unsere-dekarbonisierung\/#:~:text=http%3A\/\/www.fachinfo.eu\/dietze2020e.pdf\">DECARBONISATION? In this calculation, emissions due to land use changes are not taken into account. This explains the numerical differences between the result and those of the cited publications.
